Our
activities depend on you. We have several suggestions that many visitors
appreciate, but we can adjust to you or your group's interests. Bring a
lot of film for your camera. You get close enough to the animals to take
nice wildlife photos. The excursions are suitable for most people. You
don't have to be fit, a backpacker, or a wildlife-enthusiast. Many of our
adventures are as easy as watching TV, except that with us you will be in
it yourself.
Bird watching is great in Baluran. Observe Hornbills,
Kingfishers, Imperial pigeons, Egrets, Peacocks, Jungle fowl, and much
more. Baluran includes sea and coastal areas where there are plenty of
opportunities to enjoy deserted beaches and coral reefs.
SAVANNA - FOREST - MOUNTAIN -
BEACH - CORAL REEF
Excursions
are normally made with our 4-wheel-drive safari cars with seats on the
roof for better view and observation possibilities. It is normally easier
to get closer to the animals with a car.
The animals are more shy if you walk and especially if you are a group
of people. For visits to the beaches we use a Madurese traditional fishing
boat.
RAIN AND SUN
The best time to visit Baluran National Park is between June and
November. This is the dry period when animals are easy to see and the land
is dry enough for us to go everywhere. The rainy season is from December
to May of which January and February are the wettest with torrential rain
on many days.
However, even January and February have still enough sunny days to make
a visit worthwhile. The other months of the rainy season have occasional
rains, just enough to keep the vegetation lush and green. Rosa's Ecolodge
has a 10% "rainy season" discount on all safaris during January
and February.
ECO-SAFARIS IN BALURAN
Savanna Photographing Safari
With 4-wheel-drive safari cars we enter the park in
the morning. We normally get close enough for excellent photography
possibilities. Best from June to December.
Night safari
This is our most popular excursion. We depart in the darkness of the
small hours with our safari cars. With a spotlight managed by the safari
leader we can study the animals at amazingly close distances.
Later
we continue to a beach where we enjoy the sight of the sun rising over the
sea. This is the perfect moment for enjoying hot coffee and snacks. The
Long tailed macaques give us company.
The safari continues as an early morning adventure, as many animals are
still out on the savannah. Alternatively we remain on the beach to enjoy
the fresh seawater.
Eventually
we return to a waiting breakfast. Possible March to December, best from
July to December.
Bird Watching Safari
One day bird watching in evergreen and coastal forest. Best from June
to December.
Caldera Safari
The
Baluran mountain is a volcano with a very deep Caldera that splits the
mountain in two major parts. This Caldera is the main attraction of this
safari. It is a varied safari where we go by safari car, fishing boat and
by foot.
The walk is not too hard, but involves trekking over stones and rocks.
Bring good shoes. Before we head home we have time on the beach for a
refreshing swim. The beach is the same as in our Mangrove Beach Safari.
Best from June to December.
Coastal Hiking Safari
A 28 hour hiking and trekking adventure along the coasts of Baluran
National Park. The hike takes us through many different ecosystems with
their unique flora and fauna.
We spend the night at the Bama Beach. You need good and comfortable
walking shoes. Best from June to December.
Snorkeling
and Beach Safari
With a traditional fishing boat we visit a nice snorkeling spot at sea
before we reach our "secret" beach. We enjoy food and drink on this
deserted beach.
Next to Wildlife observation and Birdwatching,
Rosa’s Ecolodge is fast becoming famous for its SNORKELING
potentials.
Our guests like snorkeling with us because of the following reasons:
- The trip to the beach is only 5 minutes by car through open terrain
with orchards.
- The sea voyage to the coral reefs by traditional fishing proa is
around 10 minutes with an astounding sea-view and the Baluran mountain
as a background.
- The coral reef is offshore where the water is very clear because it
is outside the pollution-zone of the coastline. Even in the rainy season
it is still possible to enjoy snorkeling and swimming.
- The corals are spectacular including the rare blue coral
and many colourful fishes, among others the clown fish, but also the
blue sea star. Unlike in some places in Bali, Baluran beaches offer a
totally natural panorama with the Baluran mountain and
savanna at the horizon.

- And last but not least, you can experience the setting sun on the
return trip.
- People who have been there, say the Baluran corals are better than
those in the Maldives and Venezuela.
- Like many of our guests have said “It is like swimming in an
aquarium”. Other comments were: “this is paradise and in the world
nowadays is very rare and should therefore be protected”. And that
is exactly what we are doing now!
OUTSIDE BALURAN NATIONAL PARK
Atmosphere,
Corn, Fireflies, and Stars: There are much more to do than watching
wildlife in Baluran and having fun on a beach. Rosa's Ecolodge is located
in a Madurese village and we take our guests on a walk through the village
and over the rice paddies to feel the atmosphere and tranquility and to
see what is going on, for example traditional brick making.
We normally end up in our hideaway in a rice paddy where we sip East
Javanese coffee and roast corn and where we watch the sunset, the
fireflies, how the mighty Baluran mountain fade into the darkness and
finally the stars above.
